  • Help with setting up Midi Fighter Twister w/ BlackBox

hey guys, I'm going to try and set up a newly acquired Midi Fighter Twister with my Blackbox tomorrow. I'm hoping to set it up so the first bank on the Twister has a toggle to start or stop each sample, and the twist on each knob to control the volume for each sample. I've never configured a midi controller before, so I apologize if this is a dumb question.

As an extra question, would it be possible to program the Midi Fighter so that when a sample is toggled on to have the sample volume start at 0 and then I can raise the volume in manually using the twist on the controller knob? That way I can do a manual fade in

Thanks for any guidance you can give me with this!

I don’t have a midi fighter twister so I’m not familiar with it’s setup options but I can give you some advice which will hopefully help.

Load all your samples and set up your song in Blackbox (how you’ll need to configure the midi settings on Blackbox will depend on how the twister is set up)

Turn the gain on all your pads down as low as they’ll go.

    Save the preset.

The next time you load your preset the volume levels will all start at nothing.

To use your twister the way you want with volume control now you’ll probably need to set your knobs at relative change rather than absolute change.

anything beyond this might require knowing what options the twister allows.

Thank you for that idea, it is very helpful!

Now, to figure out how to configure this thing, haha

Can anyone who has experience with the Midi fighter Twister offer any advice?

Sorry for this dumb question, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to set this up. The Midi Fighter twister says that the "Encoder switch midi channel" is 2 and the "Encoder rotary midi" channel is 1.

I'm reading in the BlackBox manual that I need to set the GlobalMIDI channel to "Omni", but when I do this the Midi Twister doesn't do anything. It also does not control anything when I set the GlobalMIDI channel to either 1 or 2. I've never worked with midi before (Always used CV with my modular stuff) so I'm having difficulty with figuring this out...

Here is what it says in the BB manual about midi...

To Play Pads with a MIDI Device:

Blackbox has a GlobalMIDI parameter that defines which MIDI channel can trigger pads and sequences. By default, this value is set to Omni, which means that it will respond to all MIDI channels. You can configure a specific channel by changing the value of the GlobalMIDI parameter on the TOOLS screen.
        1. Push TOOLS to display the tools screen.
        2. Turn the knob next to the GlobalMIDI parameter to select the MIDI channel that you want to use to trigger pads and sequences. Set this to Omni to respond to all MIDI input channels that have not been otherwise assigned.
        3. Connect your MIDI device to blackbox and configure it to use the MIDI channel selected for the GlobalMIDI channel.
        48 49 50 51 44 454647 40 41 42 43 36 37 38 39
        1. Play some notes on your MIDI device. The table on the right shows how the MIDI
note numbers map to the blackbox pads. The range for pads is Note 36 (usually C2)
through Note 51 (usually D#3/Eb3). You may need to shift your MIDI device up or down octaves to reach these notes.
        2. Push PADS and you can watch the pads activate on the Pads screen as you play notes on your MIDI device.

It seems like I need to define a note value to each pad for every button on the controller (to turn it on/off), but I don't see an option to define notes...

I'm attaching a photo of the Midi Twister's setup application incase anyone sees something I should change..

            You're almost there:

I suggest on bank one, map each knob to a different channel (Switch MIDI Channel and Encode MIDI channel). Start in the lower left and choose channel 1. Make the Switch MIDI number be 64. Make the Encoder MIDI number be 7 for Volume. Work to the right and then upwards

On blackbox, follow the same pattern on the pads. Match each MIDI channel between the knob and the pad position. Use MVOL as your level modulator.

In this way you won't be using the global channel. On each preset you create on blackbox, you will need to map the each pad to a channel.

Thank you so much for the reply! I will try this out real soon and report back on how it goes.
              Thanks again!

                Hi Aaron,

Sorry to bump this back up, but I finally have time to sit down and try to program this. I want to confirm i'm following your advice properly...

When you say: Start in the lower left and choose channel 1. Make the Switch MIDI number be 64.
I just want to confirm that I should change each button's "Encoder Switch Midi channel" from 2 to 64? Am I correct in thinking that I should change all the Switch channels to 64 to group them on the same channel instead of keeping them on 2, which it's currently on? Is that because Midi channel 2 is already being used for something else in the BlackBox?

And when you say: Make the Encoder MIDI number be 7 for Volume.
Did you mean that I should Make the "Encoder Rotary MIDI channel" be 7 instead of 1, not the MIDI number?

And lastly, are my settings for "Switch Action Type" being "Note Toggle", and "Encoder Midi Type" being set to "Note" correct?

I'm really sorry if i'm making this more complicated then it needs to be...
Thanks again for the help with this, I really appreciate it!

No, you want the note number to always be 64 on each cell/knob. Each cell/knob needs a different MIDI channel.

As before, the channel will span from 1-16 for each pad/knob. You want to use MIDI CC 7 for volume, which is MVOL on blackbox. The term "Encoder MIDI number" is confusing. I interpret that to mean Encoder MIDI controller. Make that be 7.

Would you share the mapping File? I got a Twister too and I would love to test it

I've been pondering on getting both the Twister and the original MIDI fighter to launch the samples. I thought the MIDI fighters don't work as standalone MIDI controllers, at least that's what their site says. Is that not correct?

If this is correct I want to know! I’ve been on the fence about getting all of their products for about a year and have been about to hit purchase so many times... if they don’t work standalone no deal of course.

The Twister (knobs) works standalone. I don't know about the fighter (buttons).

Just bought a MIDI Fighter Twister. Its not easy to setup. I would appreciate if we could share tips and trix here. I got it working to trigger a pad and control volume once yesterday (got it yesterday) but then I changed some parameter and I could not get it to work again. I would like a list of all CC/notes in blackbox.

                              Blackbox is great!
