  • Samples Not Fully Loading on 3.0.9

Howdy, I've been using my blackbox for a while now and just started running into this issue after loading more samples onto the SD card.

I'm running firmware 3.0.9. I've tested with A1 and A2 SDcards and can replicate the issue on both. The A1 card is 32gb and I bought a new 128gb A2 card to test with, both exhibit the sample issues described below.

I've read several of the other posts about similar issues and I've tried several of the recommendations. Only a the first few milliseconds of the sample will load and the rest will get cutoff, sometimes a few more milliseconds of the sample will popup in the middle, This happens with both factory samples and samples I've loaded from my Splice library so I think we can rule out encoding issues. This seems to be related to how many samples are on the SD card in total, not how many pads I've loaded. I tested loading one longer sample from the SLAmbientDrones preset into a new preset on just one pad. With just factory samples on the SDcard everything works ok, when I add more files to the SDcard the factory sample will not load entirely. Sometimes it will eventually load, but it's not consistent. I deleted everything from the SDcard and just copied over the one SLAmbientDrone sample, loads just fine. I add more files to the SDcard, the sample only loads the first few milliseconds. I thought maybe my blackbox was the issues as I bought it secondhand, I ordered a new device and can replicate the issue with the new device that has a serial number 9000 units higher than my secondhand unit.

Is there a max library size I should be targeting? I wrote some code to better organize my Splice library for use on the blackbox and I'm frustrated samples won't load with larger library size on the sdcard. My Splice library is ~5gb.

Let me know if more details will help. Thanks!

It sounds like you've done a lot of testing! Was backing up and then reformatting the card with the official SD Card Formatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/) among the things you tried?

Yup, I tried that advice from another thread. Just tested again, backed up to my computer, reformatted with "overwrite format", copied files back onto the card, load up a preset and files from both my Splice library and the factory samples won't load completely.

just a brief note: "overwrite format" is not necessary and should actively be avoided for all flash memory storage formats because it prematurely shortens the life of the storage medium.

Good to know, I've been trying _anything_ to get things working.

How long and how large are the files you're trying to load and what are the sample rate and bit depths of the .wav files?
The maximum file size is 4GB but other than that, there's no limit to the amount of samples other than the size of your sd card.

I thought the encoding might be an issue, but this is happening with files from the factory sample packs. It only happens once the card size seems to go over 4.5gb. Typically most short samples like one-shots load ok, but I'm not loading up huge files into pads, the longest file I've been testing with "SY L Caverns 39 110 BPM.wav" is 0:51 seconds, 14.1mb.

What are the specs of the .wav file? I use 128GB and 256GB cards with 100GB+ libraries of samples. From one-shots to songs stems regularly without any issues. I usually use 24/48 files but some are 24/44.1 and even 16/44.1

I just wanted to chime in as well because I am having the same issue. I have a reformatted card. Same samples I've been using with the other firmwares and now some samples will not load completely. Also another issue is that on some even though toggle is selected I cannot toggle it to stop the sample from playing through (and I checked the release length and changed it to various settings and still got same results). Also loaded presets I've been using for the last year in my live sets and now those samples are not playing properly as well.

Are you also running firmware 3.0.9?

Try setting the SD Mode to Compatible and power cycle the unit. Seems to have worked for me. The samples from factory presets and Splice I've been testing with are fully loading. Does that help?

If you clear the pad which hosts the sample, and simply reload the sample, does it come up in full?

Nope, sometimes it will load slightly more of the sample, sometimes less.

You can also try the alternate SD Mode under the Tools menu.

Setting the SD Mode to Compatible and power cycling seems to have fixed the issue!
