        +1, a normalized waveform is easier to edit because the peaks and valleys are easier to see

                  The bb was initially meant as a sketch pad and a sampler. So for just drafting an idea, normalising is not actually needed, for you have the mixer.

                  It appears however that musicians use their blackbox as a proper music production tool. Suddenly, normalising would be handy, even though still not indispensable.
