  • External Midi Control for Mix Screen

External midi controller implementation for the mixer screen would be very beneficial especially for live performance. Would be awesome to be able to map my Midi Fighter Twister's 16 encoder knobs, or any controller with faders or encoder knobs, to the Mix screen and equally for the Fx screen for that matter. Control over the pads while using an external controller to control the Mix and Fx would be so clutch. Its great that the USB device host is already in place for the BlackBox, my Midi Fighter fired up right away, but opening up the midi mapping capabilities would make it even better. Look forward to future updates!

Yet another interesting idea for a future release. I will log it for consideration.

I just jammed last night with a DJ on my Blackbox and having an external mix controller would make this perfect! I’ve never used the midi fighter twister but I have lusted after it before. Maybe this is the reason to get it - once the feature is implemented of course.

The experience I had last night actually made me fall in love with the encoders you used on the blackbox so much that I would suggest you guys make an external mix controller yourselves as a step-up accessory for the blackbox.

I love the mockup. I wish it were so easy to make new products. I do have the MIDI Twister and really like it. It can work with Blackbox if you configure both sides to use MIDI Volume CC and Pan CC. We can certainly make it easier to use. Thanks for the discussion.

Any update on how well the volume control works with the Midi fighter twister?

I'm digging this up, in case this has been added and I missed it, or to give it a gentle poke again. I also have a midifighter twister that i'd love to use as a no-look mixer controller for the BB... I haven't tried the CC setup yet, but I'd imagine that would require setting every pad to a separate midi channel to work? (not something I can do, I'm using different channels for controlling different external gear)

If there was a little Learn button somewhere when you select a pad with the info button, you could just twist a knob or push the button to assign volume and/or mute per pad, or even pan for that matter. I'm not one to jump on the request heap since the BB already does so much, but this seems like a pretty useful feature for live performances. Not having to swap over to a different screen and do a bunch of finger-tap-dancing to control levels would free up some workflow, at least for me.

NoParades, you don't have to have a different channel for each pad. You can map each pad to a different knob on the midifighter twister but you do have to map each pad individually. Open the pad and go to the Main parameters page. Touch one of the three black modulation boxes below the Level parameter. Touch Learn in the top right corner. Wiggle the knob you want to use. Repeat for the next pad. You could do this once and save it as a Preset for future re-use. You can even create a new preset, and then do this for all the blank pads by pushing INFO twice on the pad. Then save it and do a Save As on the preset to make a new one Preset using the same settings.

I don't know why this never occurred to me before, assigning it at the pad level instead of from the mixer page. I i suppose I could set the button of the midi fighter to toggle a value of 0 to the same pad in order to automate the mute. The only downside to this method is the state and level won't show in any form of the UI (either pad level on the info screen or within the mixer UI) but that's true of any midi controlled parameter. I'm going to go play with this right now, thank you for the forehead-slapping answer, I sometimes can't see the forest through the trees.

Christine, this is a documentation problem. I'm another guy with a MidiFighter Twister, and the manual definitely makes you think that ONLY the volume CC parameter (presumably 7) can be used to modulate volume. The docs make no mention of the LEARN feature at all -- I had to dig for it just now to make sure it was really there .

                      hey guys -
the twister caught my eye recently.
I was just watching this video ( https://youtu.be/2R-Pbca4QkQ ) - the guidance seems clear enough for use on a PC with Ableton Live, but I'm wondering how well the "secondary function" capability works with the blackbox.

I was thinking, per pad, it might be cool if each knob could be set to toggle between filter and volume, (as midi fighter describes it, I should be able to toggle between knob functions by pressing down on the knob). Have you guys tried this? Do you need to pre-program the knob behavior using the utility on the PC in order to set the correct behavior, or does it "just do the right thing" with midi learn on the blackbox?

When I look at this video, I get the impression that IF this advanced functionality is going to work at all with the blackbox, we'd have to preprogram the twister ahead of time, since there are so many options. "Reset Encoder Value" also appeals to me. anybody try that to "snap" the filter back to zero?
                  Working...
